Engine zincs are zinc rods which get consumed by electrolytic action. This action occurs when dissimilar metals are brought into electrical contact under water. In absence of a zinc portions of your engine would be consumed. Sailors should check their zincs periodically -- especially in salt water. Check your zinc by removing it and see how much of the zinc remains. If the zinc is eroded it should be replaced.

Many newer models of Yanmar engines do not have zincs. This is because they are constructed out of materials that do not need the protection a zinc provides.
